Post What's good these days (PC Upgrades)? Reply with quote
Need to upgrade my PC. Currently running the below, which has served me well. Starting to chug along a bit now though...

Geforce GTX460
Intel i3 2120
Gskill Ripjaws 8gb DDR2 RAM

Looking to upgrade the processor/gfx and more RAM if needed. I don't really keep up so I dunno what's good. I definitely want to stick with Nvidia and Intel as my RAM and mobo is made for nvidia/intel stuff and want to remain optimised (tis the reason my old stuff has lasted so long). Money is an absolute way huge factor here, I'm skint as fuck. So don't be linking me the top line 790GTX ti or some kind of gaming super-processor or any of that. I want something comparable to what I have in value, but with a bit of extra juice to keep it rolling for another few years...

Answers on a postcard....followed by typing them in this thread.

Cheers dude. You've linked the RAM I already have, mind. Although, I got mine for about 35 quid.

the GTX760 and the i5 seem a good bet, and cheaper than I were expeting actually. My mobo is still fairly recent, so that's all good. Is using an SSD to run your OS (alongside an ext HDD for games) worth it?

Your current memory is DDR2 and your current motherboard won't be compatible for the new haswell processor (1150 socket) as I think your i3 is most likely a 1155 socket

Don't use an SSD myself (my rig is also a little old in the tooth!) but I you certainly would see a crazy improvement on speed if you stick your OS and maybe your current favourite games on one or two

Shit, It's actually DDR3, not DDR2. Wow, now I feel old.

My i3 is the newer socket, I remember as I had to buy a suitable motherboard.

I use SSD and computer boots up nice and fast. Also fast from hibernation remember though get plenty of space. You got the windows installation then you have the page file and the hibernation files which are double digit gigs in size.

*can reduce page file if you rocking shit loads of ram.

You can also disable the hiberfil by using 'powercfg -h off' from a command line. You don't really need it on a PC (useful on a laptop though) and it saves some space if you have a small SSD.

You guys shouldn't be using games or files/installations on your operating systems drives anyway.

Seperation of church and state fellas, remember the golden rule. It will only lead to tears in the future.

Wot dawgs / beeotches etc.

I'm still running this beautiful setup:

Intel Core2Duo 7400 @ 2.8 GHz
8GB RAM
Nvidia GTX 460

I haven't upgraded the thing in years and have been happily console gaming (my windows are clean thanks Lugsy) ever since...

So post-Christmas I will be planning the resurrection of my PC gaming Rig.

Things I'm keeping:

1. Case - Antec 900
2. Power supply is 700 Watt
3. The existing HDD's as storage etc.
4. Keyboard is a Razer Starcraft jobby (present!)
5. Cans = Gamescom 700 Plantronic = okeeee actually 7.1 audio n shit.
6. Mouse = cheepo LXGaming eastern import which is again okeeee actually o_0!

If / when my other equipment moves back into my house I will have a 27" Asus monitor (widescreen)

So I'll be needing the rest of the guts. I have the SSD boot situation sorted but I wondered what counts for mid-range these days?

My m'board is Asus, are they still good?

Can anyone recommend a list that will mid-range by Christmas basically?

I'l put the kettle on while I wait...thanks in advance chaps.

ps - I'm also resurrecting my Amiga 1200T packing an Apollo 68060 accelerator card, a whopping 64MB memory and a Voodoo3 gfx card -> Bow down and kiss the ring o_0!

The usual question...budget!?!?

I priced up for myself the other week:

Intel Core i5 4690K 3.5GHz Socket 1150 6(devils canyon)
ASUS Z97-A m/b
16GB (2x8GB) Corsair DDR3 Vengeance Pro Series
Seagate 2TB Barracuda Desktop Hard Drive
Samsung 850 EVO 250GB 2.5inch SSD
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
Arctic MX-4 Thermal Compound

Just over 500

I plan on keeping my 660ti/Antec case/corsair 620W psu

Brunes suggestion seems about right, although if you're not interested in overclocking you might be better off with the i5 4460 instead, with a different motherboard (like the B85-based ones) as the difference in performance if you're not overclocking is, to me, not worth the extra cost. Not quite as futureproof though.

@Neonin and Brune, thx to both of you.

Yes, no overclocking here thank you very much!

I will check this thread nearer the time and (if finances are sufficient) begin procurement!
