Post Calling all hardware deals / specs watchers... for help plz Reply with quote
I want to upgrade my core 2 duo to something a little more modern.

I'm looking for an Asus mainboard with intel chip and no less than 8GB of Ram

My other hardware should be ok for a little while longer, and I can't do this and upgrade my GPU at the same so...

Any ideas what I can get for no more than 300? I haven't looked at this for ages as I've just replaced the bits that broke so I'm lost on which chips are better than any other.

My mainboard and cpu are still chugging.

My gfx card is a Geforce 460 GTX, this replaced my 9800GTX+ which died a few years ago.

Thanks in advance...

ps - I'm serious about this. I had to spend my "saved-up" upgrade cash on a new tv (old one has died after 8 years) for the lounge and am now in a wtf mood!

It's CC time

What Daf said or Ebuyer and Overclockers. Your looking at about 170 for a new i5, maybe 80 for the mb (why asus?), leaving 50 for some memory.

Quick stuff

i5 (free delivery)
http://www.ebuyer.com/387256-core-i5-3470-3-20ghz-6mb-lga-1155-box-bx80637i53470

Motherboard so much choice not sure, I have gone gigabyte on my last couple.

Memory again so much choice depending on what speed you want, 8gb (2x4gb) fastest will be about 70 for the cheaper stuff.

If you all scan or awt, they will help in your choice, you can always come here an say what they recommend.

I went the i7 route, I also heard planetside doesn't like over clocked machines?

Good luck

What ever you do, just make sure the cpu and mb can handle the speeds or you'll 'waste' money, found that out the hard way sadly
http://ark.intel.com/products/68316/ will do the faster ones though, damn newer cpu

oh well, if I ever upgrade to a 1600 Hz compatable CPU and MB I'll have some memory ready ( if not broken by then lol )
