Patch update:

Great news! They broke it

Started ok, about a 40-50 second wait for the first two games. Now it's taken about 8 minutes and 6 tries to get a match. Ouch

New Trebuchet seems pretty nasty but just shoot the box under the armpit and things fall off in a hurry.

New mech lab is nice, stuff has stats and descriptions now. However, it is still not full screen and still no way of rearranging your mechs.

Arctic map is quality, bit of a sniper's paradise and it is HUGE. Possibly a bit too big, I can see ECM covered teams spending a long time trying to find each other in it. Still, watching an SRM Cat get blown to itty tiny bits from over 1k off was very, very sweet indeed!

Sounds like a blast, except for the ELO failure bit!

Same match finding problems for me at first. Then Tenz and I grouped for a few games and we got in in a few seconds each time. Tenz called it a night, now I'm struggling to find matches again!

In my usual optimistic fasion, I'm hoping there's a glitch in the MM which is making it take this long. Fingers crossed for quick fixes / tweaks!

On the plus side, the games I *did* get into were really fucking good, so also fingers crossed that they weren't flukes and the ELO is actually working :P

New mech lab is... better, but I'm looking forward to 2.0 tbh. Also have no idea why they don't colour code the components like recent mech games have.

Alpine map feels really epic, really like it. Has the nice side effect of making pure close range brawler builds much less of an obvious win. Even my new Wang feels slow and close range on that map.

Overall, very promising... but screw queuing for tonight :P

Nice, a big map at last, how many players for that map?

Still 8v8 but 12v12 is coming and will suit the map a lot better. I can see some frustrating games on it but overall I think it's a really good addition. We had a match on it last night that was pretty epic, including me and Rik getting up in the face of a 6 x PPC Stalker and laughing at him while we shredded his mech

The map makes a cap a valid feature again, you can't just deathmatch in the middle because the middle is so damn big you could miss each other. Suddenly scouts are needed to actually scout and LRMs & Tag work because of the longer sight lines. If all the maps were this size you would see a lot more Gauss Cats and very few Streak/SRM boats. Balanced loadouts required, as it should be.

We lost a match to a cap and it didn't feel cheap, we were in sight of the enemy cap but couldn't get to it in time while one of our lights spent the last two minutes fucking about with an enemy Cicada instead of getting to the cap 200 yards from him. Guess he'll learn for next time

Matchmaker is acting a bit weird, must be a glitch. Can't see how we can get into a match instantly as a two-man but have to try 5-6 times over ten mins when solo. Does not compute

Edit: Breaking News! They rolled back the patch. Bugger. Excessive wait times for lone wolf players apparently

That sounds brilliant Tenz, thanks for that. Getting that urge to play again.

Yeah, that'll go when you get River City Night 5 times in a row

Hmm, I may have to fiddle with my Phract loadout then, cause right now anything beyond 270m is out of range for me and if I end up on that map...

ZZAP-BOOM (Phract):
  • 315 Standard Engine (80.2kph)
  • 17 Double heatsinks
  • 2 x ERPPC, 3 x Medium Laser
DILLIGAF (Waaaaaang):
  • 280 Standard engine (99.8kph)
  • 10 Double heatsinks
  • AC5 (2t ammo), 2 x Medium Laser, 1 x Machine Gun (1t ammo), 1 x AMS (1t ammo)
Both speeds include speed tweak.

Should give me a balanced loadout across all ranges in case of running into that new map tonight

My new favourite build is on my K2, should work pretty well regardless of map size:

2x PPC
2x AC5 w/3 tons ammo
XL300
Endo
14 Double Sinks

Works really well! You can go for speculative snipes with the PPC's, not worrying about ammo; you can go purely AC5 if heat gets high; you can blaze away with both when you get that perfect shot. All weapons are firing from torso locations, have the same optimal range and similar-enough ballistic profiles to be able to group fire.

By the way Neo, I think the Wang can take a 300 engine now :D

Forgot to mention; having rebooted due to an interesting new sound bug, I forgot to reset the match type and ended up on a Conquest map... and rather enjoyed it!

Might have to give it go tonight
