Thinking of some minor "tweaks" to my system inc...

SSD
gfx card upgrade - mid range
Memory to 8GB (and faster)

Aiming to do this over 3, possibly 4 mnths and it will be th last upgrade this system gets before needing anew mo'board / cpu / mem etc.

Any suggestions Hardware guys?

Thanks for reminding me why I frequent these forums bud

So...any1? Is a Sandisk ssd anygood? Does sata 3 use a different cable to sata 2 or is it just a speed issue?

Whats a mid-range nvidia these days?

I'm afraid I know little about SSD, other than when I looked into it my motherboard didn't support SATA3 so I'd need an add-on card or a new mobo.

Graphics-wise I usually find this chart very useful. The general advice is to only bother upgrading if you can afford something three or more steps above your current one.

SATA3 help achieve higher throughput, exactly what speed I don't know of the top of my head. But if your SSD has a read/write speed greater than Sata2 then it will be limited to maximum SATA2 to get teh most you need a SATA3.

I would check, but the connector are the same, im positive. Just can't be arsed to double check. You might want a "better" quality cable though for SATA3.

I stuck 2 new 120gig SSD's in my machine a month ago as i have no Internet. I'll never look back. Windows loads in 10 seconds and PS2 in 5.

I still have a 1TB HDD that stores all my stuff like photos and music as i'm not sure of the reliability of SSDs yet. Mine are OCZ agilitys if you are interested.

I've got a 90gb vertex 3 in my works laptop. Only fitted it Friday.
With a fresh install on a 3 year old laptop, it flies.
Bios is the only slow thing. Once it gets past that, it's ready to go in 20 seconds.

Waiting for the next gen of ssd to come out and push the price of the current ones down.

I have me a single samsung 256gb SSD, as someone else in this thread said I will never ever look back. Windows boots in 5-15seconds. (My new mobo has 'express boot' so the bios flies as well) and any game on the ssd loads in seconds also. If you have the spare cash I can't recommend it enough.

This is my mo'board storage spec:

Quote:
Southbridge
4 xSATA 3 Gb/s ports
Marvell 88SE6111
1 xUltraDMA 133/100/66 for up to 2 PATA devices
1 xExternal SATA Gb/s port (SATA On the Go)

Guess my SATA are limited to 3GB/S then...not sure how that compares with the WD drives I've got plugged in...are access speeds really THAT much better then with SSD?

Is there any benefit to buying a hybrid drive? Seagate Momentus for instance? Just wondered...
