I really wanted to like EVE but I don't like the classic RPG leveling aspect.

I want a twitchy MMO space opera 4x game. no levels, no skill tree, just 4x. Massive scale. Star Citizen or Infinity (if they get off the ground) might be them!

Signed up and paid my due so I get into Alpha - this looks amazing.

Eve has a classic RPG leveling aspect? We played the same game? It has offline skill learning that is probably the best system designed so far - the skill system is one of the major draws and is unique! I would give Eve another try in the meantime.

On larger ships, friends can join you to man turrets, repair systems, or switch with you on the pilot’s chair. Think the Millennium Falcon with Han-Solo piloting and Luke on the turret.

This sounds quite fun.

Yes, I meant the offline skill learning. For me that is a negative feature. I don't want to be restricted because I haven't learned a skill yet. If I've managed to acquire technology/ships/whatever through trade/pirating/whatever or discovered a large asteroid field full of mining opportunities I should be able to use/take advantage of them immediately. That should promote a truely entrepreneurial spirit.

Plus a proper twitchy style space combat.

What I think I really want is a mash up of X (http://www.egosoft.com) and Homeworld.

What I also like is the seamless space to planet flight touted by Infinity.

That infinity seemed like the Dogs but it has not moved since. The developer is apparently focusing on making a generic game engine first. I love the idea of a seamless universe instead of systems and jumpgates.

I felt the same way about Eve with the skills and the lack of twitch combat but for some reason I have totally fallen in love with the game for the last 6 months. I think it is the Dust 514 link so the FPS element is finally in Eve albeit through a PS3...

Anyway yes this star citizen sounds like it could be really really excellent but we need a lot more detail yet. What RPG elements are there like skills, levels, etc. Is there a massive universe you explore? I sounds very instanced so far with single player elements added to it (no bad thing). To early to tell but I have faith in this one for some reason hence giving money to get into Alpha.

Anyone else pledged money to this?

They're looking at creating a simple space combat game with the engine to bring in some cash to help them finish the main game. If you look at the forums the community is trying to convince them to do a kickstarter. The idea of the game is great and the tech demos of the engine look really good but not sure if they'll deliver any time soon.

I don't think there are any RPG 'skills'. I think it's as I was describing the game I want - complete freedom. Yes massive galaxy (universe would be too big!) - when someone discovers a 'hyper space gate' it will be named after them. The idea for the single player campaign is that you're a military fighter pilot completing a tour of duty so you can get to grips with it. Then when done you're let loose in the galaxy to do whatever you want.

Yep, I've pledged some.

Star Citizen has 2 million dollars for funds so far. So they have 1.4 million from other funds, Kickstarter project reaching their 500k in 5 days, wow...

I can see this being something big, eh? :D EVE Online needs a successor and alternative, EVE is good but it's slow and out of the years I've played it, I've probably only had about a weeks worth of excitement in total.

Just watched this "hangar module" vid via Kotaku.com...

This (or X-Rebirth) plus Occulus Rift = Fuck yeah! (To quote the 'muricans!)

http://kotaku.com/walking-around-a-hangar-is-one-the-best-games-ive-play-1261207196

This / Next year is beginning to look like a good time to be into space sims (again).

Agreed Also Eve VR, but Star Citizen looks like the most important thing in PC gaming for the near future.

Dudes:

You can actually download a Hanger Module where you can see what the game is like. You can only walk around your hanger but still....I am DLing right now. Ofc you need to have pledged something on Kickstarter or from the main website.

Head over to https://robertsspaceindustries.com/hangar-module to get access to the biggest thing to happen to the PC for a long long time.
