The blocky front end is optional, it can be switched off. And that basically leaves you with Windows 7.

Windows 8 = only worthwhile for tablety types and the anal.

Will they pull that scenario where you needed Win 7 to get DX11?

Looks like the boss is going to want us to forego the Win7 update and go directly to Win8 at work, despite having already agreed to Win7

This alongside a brand new rollout of sharepoint, SCCM, printing, completely redone group policy, AppV and other things by February. Yet somehow still thinks this to be a perfectly reasonable timeframe despite us setting up to have it complete by next September to coincide with the new academic year. Wanting a brand new OS to be pushed onto desktops in the middle of this academic year, insanity

I just had a training session on sharepoint - it is bloody brilliant.

Windows 8 is released today !

I am going to watch the live stream on MS webby because I am sad like that.

Do not listen to people saying it is crap, it is windows 7 with improvements under the hood and a totally optional new style front end. I even added my start button back. There is no walled garden as the steam guy suggested, he was just trying to push his new system by scaremongering...not good. The future may have a walled garden plan but I doubt anyone would stand for it.

Do not get Windows 8 RT though. Pile of crap. Pointless till apps are made for it. It is a half way house between now and the singular model of Window 9.

This will explode the new Window 8 tablets on the market and stop Apple hopefully. If you get a tablet running Windows 8 pro then you are talking about having a full PC with all the games and programmes ever made working on it. Compare that to an iPad or a Android Tablet, they look like toys next to it.

I am going to go for the Samsung Ativ PC Pro. They stole the design from the Asus transformer It looks like but it has an i5 in it, 128gb disk and 4 gb mem. It should be able to cope with Civilisation on low settings and maybe even Eve. Main draw for the samsung for me is the S Pen technology as shown in the Note 2.

Exciting times for geeks ahead :-)

Wouldn't it be better to stop Apple with something that is free, open and cheap to develop for? Like Linux...

Beat one closed system with another? Okeeeeeeeee..........

edit* I appreciate that this sounded a bit hippy-ish after I read it back Must resist tree hugging...oh ffs!

you've always liked wood, carter.

Does windows 8 give me something I am currently missing from windows 7? No. Will I spend money upgrading for not current benefit on my home computer? No.

That is all that matters at the moment.

Carter I know it is shades of grey between M$ and Apple but I would say that M$ have done a hell of a lot more for computing than apple ever did. Without Windows we would be years behind. M$ gave us a shared environment the same environment that everyone could use to give standards to a fractious industry. Yes they made a damn fine profit out of it but so what, the world and technology moved on because of microsoft. All Apple wants is profit and to be different. Well yes they are different and offer locked up shit systems like iOS.

I loved my iPad at first and then as you do I wanted to put stuff like films and files on it. I had to go through i-fucking tunes and it would not allow me to add half the stuff that way. Apps cost a lot of money and there was not really a lot you could do with the device. I could not even plug it into a TV or anything. I got an android and could do all the above at far less money.

Linux would be good yes but it is not there yet. Google are on the right track and I would recommend reading their book they are the most "high brow" of the tech companies and I support that.

But I am glad we have Windows to unify us and W8 is going to continue to do that. They will try to put a walled garden in with the W8 RT version but that is not going to work. People like to tinker too much

You would only get Windows 8 if you were looking at tablets or touch screen all in one PCs. No reason to get it for a standard desktop unless you were going to invest in a touch screen monitor.

I have it on my desk top only so I can use it first and see what it is like. I spend 99% of my time in the desktop screen and 1% in the metro screen so apart from a few minor tweeks (on the surface) there is not much that would justify upgrading at this point.

I do not get these articles... you can always install whatever you want on Windows 8. There is nothing stopping you installing a violent porn game rated 21+. You might not have been able to download it through the windows 8 metro store but then I have never even seen that so a bit silly really.

I quite like Win 7 so I'll stick with it for the time being, but I also like the look of the Surface and the idea of a proper computer in tablet form. Just got my Kindle Fire so I'll see how much use I get out of that for 6 months or so, then if I use it a lot, I'll pass it off to the wife and upgrade to a Surface or Transformer prime
