At the point the admiral tells you you did a good job, stop the game and watch the red ending on youtube. Just trust me on this

Tenz mini-review! Ok, it isn't very mini because A) I wrote it during the immensly long loading times and B) my games drive has crapped out on me and I'm having to reinstall it... at 45GB. Could have been worse, could have been the porn drive

Well this game had reviews all over the place Angry Joe gave it 6 and 7, PC Gamer gave it an 8 and Gamespot gave it a 6. I'd strongly advise reading some of those if you are thinking of buying the game but I'll give a few thoughts on why I've actually quite enjoyed it.

It has some quite serious issues but the further you get into it, the less they matter. It's not a great game but it isn't a bad game either, although it certainly has its low points.

It starts... poorly. ME2 was possibly the greatest opening sequence of a computer game ever and ME3 was pretty decent too so it had a lot to live up to and fails miserably. Get a few hours in and it improves significantly.

The original trilogy were story and character driven games but in Andromeda the RPG elements are not as good. There are some great moments and some great characters but there are also some serious issues with the RPG elements and I'll go into those in depth further down.

Where the game shines for me is as a sci-fi Far Cry game. Just use the main story as an excuse to get out and explore the planets. The combat is more action oriented than the previous games, it's shallower but still fun and the game is truly gorgeous in places and has worlds worth spending the time to explore with multitudes of side quests that vary in quality but are mostly fun.

So, a quick guide on how to make Andromeda an 8/10 instead of a 6/10:

1. Roll a female character. Your character is a complete pussy so give them one.
2. Google how to make an attractive female character. You need to do this as the devs seem to have taken steps to make all females deliberately 'plain'.
3. Turn on subtitles.
4. Space bar spam your way through all conversations. Treat such conversations as a necessary evil to be endured for the sake of fun found elsewhere.
5. Do not interact with anyone who is not a quest giver or a merchant.
6. Treat Drack as one of your mandatory companions. His grumpy old Krogan routine neatly off sets the godawful liberal handwringing snowflakiness of the writing

Andromeda RPG Issues

So you have ignored Tenz's advice above and decided to actually play the RPG elements. What exactly is the problem you ask?

Okee, lots of controversy over this game, most of it is bollocks as far as I'm concerned but.. well, Bioware have lost the plot somewhere with this diversity shit... or have they?

I stated playing it after the first big patch and didn't get any of the truly awful face animations you can find on youtube but I did have some serious 'wtf were they thinking' moments in this game.

Most of the voice acting is fine but a couple of the supporting cast are a bit wooden. I can live with this, it happens, remember Farengar the mage from Whiterun in Skyrim? "Ah... yesh, the Jarl has... sent me someone... to help"

Most of the writing is fine, 98% of it is fine. However the 2% that is not fine is truly cringeworthy. Some of it is just staggeringly naive when it comes to how to deal with hostility. Hopey feely shit only works when you have a big stick handy in case it doesn't work. Half the conversations on your ship seem to revolve around how people are feeling. Who fucking cares? We are trying to save the fucking galaxy! Suck it up Princess! Sigh.

So a patient escapes cryo and is in stage two of a disease that is highly contagious and lethal when it hits stage three. I need to find her urgently but I can't use my ship because my doctor has gone awol and is getting shitfaced in the bar because the incredibly annoying Asari made a mild criticism. You then have to tell her that she isn't bossy (she is) and that she doesn't treat the crew like lab rats (she does) and she perks right up and gets back to work so you can go and see if Typhoid Mary has wiped out an entire colony because you had to waste time dealing with this purile shite. Just... wtf Bioware?

Another time you find two ex-Cerberus employees have fucked up the minds of some nearby settlers and reduced them to potatoes. You have three options to deal with them:

A) Let them carry on
B) Lock out their research and let them go
C) Destroy their research and imprison/kill them

Ok, that's a lie option C) doesn't exist. Yup, the harshest thing you can do is let them go This is just pathetic, I'm sure their future victims will be grateful for your limp wristed pansy attitude to punishing criminals

And the female faces.. oh dear god, the faces!

Your character is a pussy. Sorry but they just are. I miss Shepherd. Shepherd would have taken this galaxy by the scruff of the neck and shaken some common sense into it but Shepherd is gone and now we have an overly emo main character, barely out of their teens, who simply will not stand up for themselves when people get in their face. If you play the male dude you will probably end up shouting at him to grow a pair. 34 hours in, I gave up shouting and re-rolled as a female.

Oh dear god the faces!

Lets start with the Asari! What the actual fuck did Bioware do to an entire fucking race?! With one exception they are all the same face model, a fat, round face badly articulated face model that looks like Ed Miliband! AAAAAARGH!

You cannot get away from it either. Every single time you have a conversation with an Asari you automatically go "YYEEEEURRGHH!". I simply cannot comprehend how any game studio on the planet could think that face model was acceptable.

The default female Ryder is also seriously fuck ugly, she didn't used to be, she got deliberately changed by Bioware to be fugly. They paid a model (Jayde Rossi) to use her likeness and then made a character that looks nothing like her. Just... again, what the actual fuck Bioware?!

On character creation all the default heads are just horrible.

This 6 minute video starts with the Mass Effect 3 presets from 5 years ago and compares them to the Andromeda presets. About 2.5mins in it then goes on to compare Ashley from ME1 ten years ago to one of the main characters in Andromeda. What the actual fuck went on in development and QA of this game?

So there is definitely some weird shit going down. Bioware done fucked it up right? All us gamers will stop buying their shit right?!

Umm, apparently not. It seems that Bioware games are played by twice as women as the industry average. /sigh

Oh well, look ultimately you can roll your own attractive Ryder, male or female and as for the crew you can just have them wear helmets most of the time and that solvs most of the problems.

Nothing can help those poor Asari though YYEEEEURRGHH!
