Ball was in the box, that's all that matters

well, no
if a player punched another player at the opposite end from the ball being in the penalty area, would that be a penalty ?

Within reason man, he was obviously the active man during that moment of play, the ball was near him and Rooney fouled him. While the players were just (as in inches) outside the ball was inside. Unless they've changed the rules lately (which is possible) then the referee should of given a pen.

Regardless of outcome it was a fucking stupid thing to do - not the first and won't be the last from the boy wonder :\

Says a fair bit that we've lost both away games to the only decent competition in our group. We went to pieces after their first. They shit all over our left wing after that :\

I think McClaren engaged the headless chicken sunday league mode

England came out in the 2nd half looking like a team happy to sit on a 1-0 lead and payed the ultimate price.

As Munkhi said, 2 away games against semi-decent opposition have ended in defeat. 3-0 wins against inferior competition don't count for jack shit if you can't take points from the other nearly rans.

*I know we beat the ruskies 3-0 but that was a glossy result on a mediocre performance

It was one of those 50/50 calls for the ref but generally if the challenge is outside the box........

Bottom line England should have had the game stitched up before the penalty was awarded and should be good enough to take at least a point from an outfit such as Russia.

A direct free kick is also awarded to the opposing team if a player

A direct free kick is taken from where the offence occurred. * (see

Ok so you're right, I'm sure it used to be the position of the ball was the location of the offense in certain circumstances, and every footy game I've ever played makes it the position of the ball for everything except offside

He should HAVE called a free kick, but Rooney should never have been schooled or given away a foul like that.
